Northern Lights over a winding road and dark hills

Hunting the
Northern Lights

Our most popular tour has one mission: to find the best place to experience the Northern Lights tonight.

Every evening
15 Sep – 10 Apr
Duration
Up to 4.5 hours
Group size
Up to 8 guests
Price
From NOK 2,200

Alta is a wonderful place to see the Northern Lights, but the weather gods are not always on our side. When it’s cloudy, snowing or raining in Alta, we use our knowledge to head towards better weather.

With more than 15 years’ experience as Aurora chasers, we found the Northern Lights on 87–90% of our departures last season. But remember, there are no guarantees.

The public tour is open to anyone, so your group may include guests from all over the world, up to eight of you and a guide who also drives. All our guides speak English, and one can guide in German. For a larger family or group, we can use a bigger bus and more guides.

How the evening goes

  1. 1

    Pickup

We collect you from your hotel or the cruise port, or you meet us at GLØD HQ if you are staying with us.

  2. 2

    Briefing and soup

At GLØD HQ we explain the Northern Lights, where to look for them that evening, and how to photograph them. Need warmer clothes? We lend you a thermo suit and overshoes. Hot soup with bread is served here or later out under the sky.

  3. 3

    The hunt

In VW Caravelle 4Motion minibuses we head for areas with little light pollution. If Alta is cloudy, we drive up to 200 km along the coast, the fjords or inland to find clear skies, stopping to check conditions and take photos.

  4. 4

    Photos and the ride home

Our guides are skilled photographers and help with your camera settings. Their photos from the evening are free for you to keep, including one of yourself beneath the Northern Lights, weather permitting.
